ocean-spirit21

IKA and PKRA seal cooperation agreement

26 01 2009

The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) and the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA) came to an agreement regarding the issues raised by PKRA prior to joining the IKA. It will be noted that IKA was sanctioned by the International Sailing Federation as the worldwide governing body of kiteboarding.

In a marathon conference call held Saturday, IKA Chairman Christian Conrad, IKA Executive Secretary Markus Schwendtner, PKRA President Mauricio Toscano and PKRA Media Director Paul Caswell finally agreed to several key issues raised by the PKRA. Although there are still several details that need to be discussed, both Schwendtner and Toscano declined to give details pending further talks.

Among the main key issues agreed upon during the conference is the splitting up of the Freestyle category during the 2009 season into two disciplines, Progressive Freestyle and Freestyle.

“Due to the fact that both styles of Freestyle are so different, and the fact that the riders have not enough time to adapt and to train for a unified judging system, the Freestyle category will be split into two disciplines, “Progressive Freestyle” and “Freestyle”, said Schwendtner.

This resolves the issues about judging criteria as well as grading events that the PKRA raised against IKA. These two disciplines will be major disciplines this year where the PKRA will host Progressive Freestyle World Championship events while KPWT will host Freestyle World Championship events.

Another major issue resolved is the judging guidelines where both parties agreed that in order to develop a unified set of freestyle rules for 2010, a judging sub-committee will be formed in 2009, who will handle the input from riders or their representatives. The judging sub-committee will consist of head judges from both world tour organizations, appointed riders from both tours, as well as representatives from the larger national kiteboarding associations. This patched up the issue regarding riders’ input into the development of the sport, which is also one of the key issues raised by the PKRA.

Paul Caswell, who initiated the recent conferences, also mentioned that both organizations will be working on further details in the coming weeks before the start of the 2009 season.

“PKRA and IKA will be working on all the details over the next week and more details will follow, including ranking issues and fine-tuning of the sanctioning agreement among others,” added Caswell.

With the key issues now with clear solutions, both the PKRA and IKA are optimistic regarding talks over the coming week and both are expecting a good outcome in ironing out all issues.

About IKA

The International Kiteboarding Association is an International Class Association of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). It is sanctioned as the world wide governing body of kiteboarding, amongst other responsibilities taking over the administration of the sport and combining world events into one ranking.

About PKRA

The Professional Kiteboard Riders Association has been in the forefront of professional kiteboarding, organizing world-class, professional kiteboarding events and the PKRA World Tour since 2000. In 2008, PKRA had 11 kiteboarding events in 10 different countries around the world and was participated by the best kiteboarders from more than 26 countries.

2009 Kiteboarding World Championship

21 11 2008

alt_crw_3534

For the first time in history, the 2009 Kiteboarding World Championship title will be sanctioned by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).

This became possible by approving the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) as official class association during the quadrenual ISAF general meeting in Madrid last week. From now on, Kiteboarding is on par with other parts of international sailing as the ‘Volvo Ocean Race’ or the ‘Americas Cup’.

To Markus Schwendtner, executive secretary of the IKA, this is an important step towards the positive development of this young sport: ‘Giving the world championship rights to the IKA clarifies the structures in international kiteboarding and ensures same reglementation for national and international kiteboarding competitions. It has now become possible to compete under consistant and recognized rules. Thereby the sport becomes more attractive and transparent to athletes, spectators and the media’. In the past, international kiteboarding competition took mainly place within two private world tours. Thus there have been two world champions, elected by different sets of rules.

The world wide unified rulebook used by the IKA paves the way for a global world ranking with one conjoined world champion. The ranking is intended to include the present world tours, independent organisers and national events. ‘National competitions become more important, because active sailors can collect valuable points for the world ranking already on a national level. Furthermore, access to the formula one of kiteboarding becomes accessible for a broader base of sailors’, illustrates Thilo Trefz, organiser of the German ‘Kitesurf-Trophy’.

The international kiteboarding scene welcomes the development as well as event organizers around the world, where the approval of the IKA earns positive feedback: ‘St Francis is very interested in hosting the course racing world championship and have a place holder on our 2009 schedule for a major kite event.’ says John Craig, race manager of the renowned St. Francis Yacht Clubs of San Francisco.

The IKA is now looking forward to start negotiations towards a worldwide coordinated regatta schedule 2009. For this purpose the IKA invites all promoters, organisers and associations to cooperate.

KPWT Superkite First Round Freestyle 08

18 09 2008

This second day of the Superkite Brasil 2008 will stick to everybody’s memory and become a major highlight of the Kiteboard Pro Wolrd Tour 2008.

50 riders
3 disciplines run in 1 day: Wave, Freestyle, Kiteloop
10 hours of competition…
2 different spots and for the first time ever a Kiteboarding World Cup in Lagoa de Cauipe, the best and most wonderful spot in the world !!!

The day started at 7am with the Wave skippers meeting. At 7.30, all wave riders and the technical staff loaded the Buggies of the organization and hit to Pico das Almas, the wave spot of Cumbuco. From 9 to 11 am the competitors pushed their talent hard to go through their heats. The show will carry on tomorrow morning.

The main focuse of the day was definitely the Freestyle competition in lagoa de Cauipe. The show started at 1pm. The “Brazilian team”, supported by their friends and fans performed amazing moves and jumps. Used to the spot and completely at ease with the conditions their level was absolutely unbelievable!

On the women side, a special congratulation to Ainhoa Garcia who managed to reach the third place despite a painfull knee injury. She made the difference in front of Kristin Boese thanks to her difficulty level and the variety of moves. Kristin crashed many times and did not manage to express herself where as Ainhoa went to Backloop, Kiteloop, Backside pass.

The final between Pauline Boussard and Marine Sudre was a very nice heat. They both passed Railey to blind and/or Railey to revert but Pauline took the advantage thanks to the variety and her technical difficulty. Special applause to Pauline Boussard, winner of the women Freestyle first round !

WOMEN FREESTYLE RESULTS AFTER THE FIRST ROUND (PROVISIONAL RESULTS)
1.    Pauline Boussard (FRA) – F-One
2.    Marine Sudre  (AUS) – Cabrinha
3.    Ainhoa Garcia (SPA) – Airush
4.    Kristin Boese (GER) – Best Kiteboarding

On the men side, many heats were actually very close. The level of the Kiteboard Pro World Tour has become amazingly high. You never know how far the riders will push the limits!

The Brazilian really stood out in the competition. Only one non Brazilian citizen managed to reach the podium. He has already proved his talent on the Tour. He comes from Maui. He’s promised for a very long career: Jesse Richman. The looser final between Jesse and Luis Alberto Cruz was very close. They both have a very high technical difficulty, clear landings and a very good variety. At the end, Jesse made the difference with more difficult moves and a very stylish riding.

The Final was 100% Brazilian: Carlos Monteiro / Jose Evandro Da Silva.
Carlos Monteiro really performed nice heats in this Freestyle first round but nevertheless Da Silva really flew over the lagoa de Caipe. His victory was obvious ! Perfect landings, variety, high difficulty. With 1 KGB, 313, Slim and Kiteloop slim there was absolutely no hesitation about his victory.
